My 2007  Interview with Coach Jim Boeheim at the Syracuse Camp

Prystal: What is the first thing you look for in a player?

Boeheim: Does the kid come from a winning program? Does the kid have good grades? We are looking for big guys that can defend and rebound and guys that can shoot it. We never think we have enough players because kids leave early for the NBA and someone has to be ready to take their spot.

Prystal: Are you looking for McDonald’s All American’s?

Boeheim: No, our National Championship team only had 2 and Maryland a few years ago had none!

Prystal: Who was the most courageous player you have ever coached?

Boeheim: Gerry McNamara (PA/MD Shootout Alum)…He was the most competitive player I have ever seen! He was never afraid to take the big shots. I first saw him his sophomore year in High School.

Prystal: Tell us about the Olympic Team you are helping Coach K with…

Boeheim: We will add Chauncy Billups, Kobe and Jason Kidd to the team that went 14-1 last year. The daily regiment includes a 2 hour practice in the am and a 2 hour practice in the pm. These guys are not getting paid, so it tells you the pride that they have. We will attempt to qualify in Vegas in August.

Prystal: Who are the two top players you have ever coached?

Boeheim: Carmello and Derrick Coleman. Here is a question for you? Who has the most rebounds in the history of College Basketball?

Prystal: I don’t know.

Boeheim: Tim Duncan followed by Derrick Coleman.
