Thanks to a 20-point effort
from Matt Fritz and several other contributions, Parkland beat Glen
Mills 68-63 in overtime to secure a spot in the tournament's Final Four. The
Trojans will next play in the bracket finals at 5:30.
Williamsport came through the other bracket unscathed.
As many might know, this is a double-elimination tournament only until the
bracket finals. Once you get to the final four, it's one and done.
Parkland was very impressive at times against a very talented and balanced
Glen Mills that refused to fold. The Trojans had a 53-47 lead late in
regulation, only to fall behind 56-53. But MJ Miorelli, who hit a game-winning
3-pointer at the buzzer to beat Susquehanna Township this morning, hit another
big trey to tie it. Then after the Battlin' Bulls went up 58-56, Jaleel Clark
hit a runner at the regulation horn to send the game into overtime.
It wouldn't be a surprise to see Glen Mills fight all the way back through the
loser's bracket to get another shot at Parkland at 5:30, but the fresher and
very deep Trojans should have the edge in the rematch.
As of this writing, Dieruff (even without Travis Stoudt) was still alive as
was Emmaus, Easton, Liberty and Central Catholic. Freedom edged CCHS in a
thriller this morning, but the Pates fell to Williamsport 42-34 despite a
19-point effort by Andrew Stein.
Half of the LVC still being alive in the Stellar on early Sunday afternoon
truly bodes well for the league this winter. I still want to enjoy the rest of
summer and I always love football season, but this weekend has me looking
forward to next winter. Things are really going to be interesting on the high
school hoops circuit, especially in what looks like a very strong LVC.
