Virtual Summer School: Assignments
The Middle East Unit
Note:
1-Label the map and then place the other assignments in your notebook.

3-What do these terms mean? summarize-restate briefly the main ideas
and/or important details.; analyze-read for information and make
a determination or a decision.
Assignment #1:
a. Read pp86 to 93.
b. Go to the map on pp88-89. Label the outline map: include countries, capitals,
water bodies, physical features, including the Suez Canal.
Draw on the Tropic of Cancer and the 40 degree north latitude line. (Remember:
latitude lines run east and west, but they measure distance north
or south of the equator. (Remember: that we always look for the 40
degree north latitude line since the same line runs around the world
and travels through the Harrisburg area); (Remember: All the countries
shown in the darker grey are considered the Middle East and they indicate
the capital for each country by placing a star in front of the name of the
capital city).

c. Go to the internet map, Israel and neighboring states
political
map, and add these three areas to your map: the Gaza Strip, Golan
Heights, and West Bank; locate the same three areas on this
map called "occupied territories."
d. Using the search engine dogpile (type in the name of the item you are looking for) locate the Straits of Hormuz, and the Sinai Peninsula. In your notebook, tell where they are located and tell why the Strait of Hormuz is so important to the world's economy.
Assignment #2:
a. Read pp94-102. Identify these terms in your notebook: Mesopotamia, cuneiform, the Code of Hammurabi, Judaism, monotheism, Christianity, Shiites, Sunnis, mosque, Ottoman Empire, Allah, Mohammed.
b. Read p98, "Muslim beliefs and practices," and explain in your notebook each of the five practices known as the Five Pillars of Wisdom.
Assignment #3: Use the dictionary to find this vocabulary word: minaret.
Assignment #4:
a. Read an article about a person or event in the Middle East from the Yemen Times (http://www.yementimes.com/), and summarize it in two paragraphs.
Assignment #5:
a. Read pp109-118, Explain: who are the Palestinians and what are their major concerns. Enter this information in your notebook.
b. Read and explain what the Balfour Declaration is about. How does it effect the situation today in the Middle East between Israel and the Palestinians?

Assignment #6: Explain what this political cartoon means?
Assignment #7:
a. Read pp 123-127
b. Examine the graphs on pp124-125 and answer questions 1, 2, 3, 4,
and 5 on p125 (11)
c. Answer these questions from your reading on pages 123-127 (12):
-What is the chief goal of OPEC?
-Who are the member countries of OPEC?
Assignment #8:
a. Read pp 109-122.
b. Identify(13): Gamal Abdel Nasser, Six Day War, Anwar al-Sadat,
Camp David Accords, Yitzhak Rabin, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi.
Assignment #9:
1- Study the items on the Photo ID
page(14).
2- Analyze(in a few sentences in your notebook) the impact that each of
these three men has had on the United States.
3- Be prepared to recognize the three people and the flag on your mid-term
test.
Assignment #10:
1- Review the map and the completed assignments in your notebook from this unit. Have you completed all the assignments?
