Assignment# 1-
a. Read pp240 to 246.
b. Label the outline map: Great Wall., Beijing, Nanjing, Yangtze River,Hong Kong, Taiwan, Shanghai, Yellow Sea, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Tokyo, Hokkaido, Honshu, North Korea, South Korea, Pyongyang, Seoul, Sea of Japan, Japan, Gobi Desert, Altai Mountains, China, Manchuria, Yalu River, Yellow River.
c. Print off an outline map of this area, click HERE

Assignment# 2-
a. Print out two copies of the Analysis Tool Compare and Contrast (or use the forms that were given to you at our first meeting).
b. Contrast and compare the sports section of the Minneapolis-St.Paul Star Tribune with the Daily Youmari (Japan).  It comes up first in Japanese, but in 15 seconds it changes to English.
c. Then contrast and compare the sports section in the Kyodo News with the Baltimore Sun.
d. Use the Analysis Tool Compare and Contrast to complete these two tasks.
e. Turn these two forms in when you come to take the the mid-term exam.

Assignment# 3-
a. What caused Americans to mistrust their fellow citizens of Japanese ancestry as of December 7, 1941?
b. Read Executive Order No. 9066. Then in your notebook, explain
1-Who issued this order?
2-Why was it issued?
3-What happened as a result of this Executive Order? In your notebooks, write a paragraph explaining the effect of Executive Order No. 9066 on Japanese Americans living on the west coast.
c. Then read the camp experience entitled, "Life in Camp Harmony."
d. Read about the Manzanar Camp. What type of symbolism is provided by the paper cranes that were placed at the obelisk.
e- Learn about the Japanese American Memorial in Washington, D.C.
f. In your notebooks, write a paragraph explaining, "What type of symbolism is contained in the cranes that were found at the obelisk at Manzanar in California and are found in the bronze sculpture in Washington, D.C.?"   Before arriving at your conclusion, communicate with  friends and/or relatives.

Assignment #4-
a. Read pp246-253
b. Define: dynasty (see page 568)
c. Draw a chart in your notebook that shows the accomplishments of the following dynasties:

(For example: Which dynasty invented movable type? During which dynasty did Marco Polo visit China? During which dynasty did they begin to build the Great Wall? Which is the first and which is the last dynasty in Chinese history?)

Assignment #5-
a. Study pages 247-249 and in your notebook write three paragraphs, one that explains each of these three: Confuciansim, Taoism, and Shintoism. Use the intenet when necessary.
b. Read pp253-262
Identify: the Opium War, indemnity, Kuomintang, warlord, Sun Yat-sen, Chiang Kai-shek, Mao Zedong.
c. Find out why the Nationalists lost control of China to the Communists. Read your text 256-258 to see what you can find, then go out on the internet and find a source that provides information on this issue. Then email your answer to wgaffey@pa.net. Please provide your answer in two paragraphs in sentence form. The question: How did the Nationalists lose control of China to the Communists? Or the question could be: How did the Communists take control of China?

Assignment #6-

-Photo ID
-Be able to identify these photographs and the flag; in your notebook, provide some background information about each of the three people and their place in the history of this area of the world.

1- Review the map and the completed assignments in your notebook from this unit. Have you completed all the assignments?
2- Take the East Asia Unit Test using your map and notebook

-On this page, use the Classword and the  the password that you were given

c- You will find a long list of quizzes, click on East Asia Summer School
d- You do not need to print out the results, they will be sent to me automatically by the  website. You must take the East Asia Summer School Quiz at least twice, or until you get 100%. The website will send  me the result each time you take the quiz.
e-Taking the quiz: choose an answer by clicking on one of the small circles that you feel is correct; then click on "Check It"; this will take you to the next question; meanwhile in the upper right hand corner, quizlab tells you if the choice was correct or incorrect; if the choice is incorrect, funbrain will provide the correct answer. Students should keep notes in their notebook on the correct responses for questions that they might have missed. Taking the test over and over helps the student retain the correct answers by taking notes. Repetition increases retention!
