What might best be described as "Survival Saturday" will be followed by what officials hope is a "Super Sunday" at Lehigh Valley SportsFest's "A-town Throwdown" boys basketball tournament.

Saturday's blockbuster 44-game card trimmed the field from 44 teams to the final 16 who will play in a single-elimination format beginning at 9 a.m. Sunday at Cedar Beach with everyone setting their sights on the 7 p.m. title game.

Easton, Emmaus, Freedom, Liberty and Allen are the five local teams who completed pool play at 3-0. Also finishing 3-0 were Octorara, North Penn, Wissahickon, Reading and Bensalem.

Two locals qualifying with a 2-1 marks were Bethlehem Catholic and Salisbury. Those two will be joined in the " Sweet 16" by Nazareth of Brooklyn, Constitution, Springfield-Delco and Pottstown.

Several intriguing matchups will get things off to a fast start Sunday morning. The 9 a.m. matchups are Easton-North Penn and Liberty-Nazareth (Brooklyn) to be followed at 10 by Octorara-Salisbury and Wissahickon-Springfield of Delaware County. At 11, it will be Pottstown-Bensalem and Reading-Constitution and the noon showdowns are Allen-Becahi and Emmaus-Freedom.

The quarterfinals are set for 1 and 2 p.m., while the semis are slated for 3 and 4 p.m.

While Liberty and Allen always generate a lot of attention, Easton and Emmaus are both having solid summers.

The Red Rovers were one of the last two unbeatens last weekend in the Stellar tournament and are now 8-1 combined in the two events.

"We're seeing a lot of kids step up both weekends," said Easton coach Jim Hutnik. "There were a couple of kids with question marks coming in who really showed us what they can do. We've had some good balance. We're getting contributions up and down the bench."

For the Red Rovers, the back-to-back appearances in Allentown are big events since they don't play in a league.

The program is coming off a 12-11 season and a loss to East Stroudsburg North in the first round of the District 11 4A tournament. For Easton, that's a down year.

But like so many other Lehigh Valley Conference squads, the Rovers figure to be much improved next winter.

"The kids are playing hard defensively, which in this heat, is all you can ask," Hutnik said. "It's always good to get into this kind of competition. The kids look forward to coming down here. We only play in three or four tournaments all summer and do a team camp. So, winning here is important to us."

•Just like Easton, Emmaus was a borderline playoff team last year. The Green Hornets just got into districts at 11-11 and then lost a first-round game to Whitehall.

But Emmaus is also a team worth watching in the 2010-2011 season with the majority of its roster returning.

The Green Hornets were 3-2 in the Stellar last weekend with one loss coming in double-OT to Manheim Township and the other being a one-point setback to Wilson West Lawn.

Emmaus is 3-0 this weekend and looking like it might stick around on Sunday.

"We're excited about it," said coach Steve Yoder, whose team is also 8-3 in the Allentown Summer League. "We played well in pool play and we're coming into Sunday with a lot of confidence."

The Green Hornets do not have a marquee player, but a lot of good ones.

Yoder signaled out the play of senior Tim Sullivan, one of two 12th graders on the team. Danny Kinek, the other senior, has been kept busy by lacrosse this weekend.

A long list of juniors are also creating a buzz, including Matt Wiseley, Steve Jaindl, Greg Bobal, Tim Merithew, Steve Gigler, Nate Tannous and Ryan Fatzinger.

"We played a lot of kids as sophomores last year and it paid off," Yoder said. "We can be tough to defend because we have so many kids who can score. We have three or four kids who can score in double figures every game.."

CHICKS STILL CHIRPING

Allen is still among the local teams left in the American Arch SportsFest girls tournament.

The Chicks were beaten by Bangor on Thursday, but came back with three wins on Saturday, including one by forfeit.

"SportsFest is always fun and a great opportunity for us to play against some good teams," said rising senior Syrena Hess. "It's a great atmosphere. Everybody's friendly and you just want to get out there and play."

Hess said her team is "a little short" in terms of height, but will compensate with quickness.

"We're going to have a good year," Hess said.

Allen assistant Stan Broyles, filling in for head coach Tom Gallagher who is spending this weekend at a wedding in Seattle, agreed that the Chicks will be fast.

"We're going to have good senior leadership with Kassandra Church, My Khu, Shateial Styles and Syrena," Broyles said. "The kids are good, they're just small. We're going to be much faster once we get inside and in a gym."

Broyles, a 13-year assistant, said "We'd love to win this one for Tommy. These are great kids and they'll give it their best shot."

Allen plays Parkland in an elimination game at 9 a.m. The winners bracket semis at 10 a.m. Sunday will feature Northampton against Dunmore and Nazareth battling Daniel Boone.

TREYS AND RAVES

The first SportsFest 3-point shooting contest and slam-dunk competition unfolded late Saturday and attracted a big crowd around Cedar Beach's main court.

Allen's Eric Ayers, a rising junior, made 13 3-pointers in a minute to win the 3-point competition. He had 12 in the qualifying round.

"I was nervous, but after I hit the first couple it was all good," Ayers said. "I tried to stay hot. It's the first time I've ever won anything like this in front of a big crowd. The strong point of my game is shooting 3s."

Bensalem's Chris McMullin won the slam-dunk competition, edging out teammate Calvin Brown.

Brown had a few spectacular dunks during qualifying, but couldn't convert either of his attempts in the finals.

"This was a lot of fun," McMullin said. "I've never been in a dunk competition before. Calvin's my boy and we go at it all the time. I got him tonight."
