Coudersport Falcons -they were the last hope for this year

3/9/08, All the undefeated teams are gone, Coudersport lost to Kennedy Catholic 58-43, story  HERE
3/1/08, They defeated Homer Center 70-40 and are now the "last team standing."  The state's only undefeated team remaining in the playoffs.
2/5/08, boys, 21-0.  According to the District 9 website (http://www.d9sports.com), Coudersport leads the district in scoring with 1420 points, an average of 67.6 per game.  They defeated Northern Potter  84-44 on Feb 5.  Their closest game was a 57-56 overtime win at St. Mary's on Dec 14th.  In this game, "St. Marys led 26-22 and was inbounding the ball from under its own hoop when a St. Mary's player,  Matt Guido got disoriented after receiving the inbounds pass and laid the ball up for a 2-point basket. Unfortunately for Guido, it was the wrong basket giving Coudersport two points and cutting the Dutch lead to 26-24 at halftime."    Coudersport sent the game to overtime when Derek Burdick hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left tying the game at 49 and then outscored St. Mary's 8-7 in the extra period. So as it stands now, eliminate the Guido basket and maybe Coudersport would not be on this list!

2/22/08, The Berks champion and top-seeded Red Knights (29-0), who matched their best start in school history, set by the Donyell Marshall-led 1990-91 squad, face third-seeded Central Dauphin East (24-5) for the district title Saturday at the Giant Center at 1 p.m.  (Credit: Darryl Grumling, Reading Eagle)

2/24/08, The Reading Red Knights used three second-quarter 3-pointers to build the lead they would keep to win the championship 63-51 over East before 3,953 in Hershey.   "We had to beat a Mid-Penn team to get a little bit of respect," Reading coach Richard Reyes said. "They battle night in and night out. I think we earned our stripes here." It was the 18th District 3 title for Reading (30-0).  (Roxanne Moses, Patriot News)

2/11/08, the Abington Heights Lady Comets finished off a perfect regular season last week with wins over  Scranton and Scranton Prep, finishing a perfect run that saw it start the regular season and finish it at No. 1. The Lady Comets also are the state’s top-ranked team in Class AAAA, according to the Harrisburg Patriot-News poll.  Dunmore (23-1) remains No. 2, it’s only loss this season was in the final of the Lynett tournament to Abington Heights. (Scranton Times-Tribune)
2/22/08, The state’s top-ranked Class AAAA girls team, Abington Heights, will face its nemesis, Scranton, for the third time this season on Saturday. The game will be played at 1 p.m. at Carbondale Area High School.  (Scranton Times-Tribune)
2/25/08, Abington Heights now at 25-1 must face Downingtown East, who ended the undefeated season of  Methacton.  East could send the Comets home early!
3/1/08, yes Downingtown East did send the Comets home early, 36-30.

2/10/08, The unbeaten Monessen Lady Greyhound girls' basketball team should be well rested when it plays Friday or Saturday in the WPIAL playoffs against Geibel or Monaca.  As expected, the Lady Greyhounds didn't get much of a workout in a 67-24 first-round romp over young California Friday in the Charleroi gym. Monessen stands at 24-0. In their last three meetings, Monessen has outscored California, 209-48.  (Credit: Brian Herman, The Valley Independent)
2/21/08, In a late-game surge Wednesday against Vincentian in the semifinals. senior Christina Chukwuedo scored five points in the final 20 seconds to push Monessen to a 48-45 win and stand at 26-0.  If Monessen wins tomorrow, the Greyhounds will become only the 10th girls' team in the past 20 years to earn a WPIAL crown with an undefeated record. The last team to do it was Avonworth, which rolled to the 2004-05 WPIAL Class AA title with a 23-0 mark.  (Credit: Colin Dunlap, Pittsburgh Post Gazette)

2/9/08, The Methacton Lady Warriors finished at 24-0 and a 15-0 American Conference schedule record.  The Norristown school at 1001 Kriebel Mill Road now prepares for the playoffs.  Their school website boasts of  "Methacon Pride!"-but it only mentions the Winter Track team and says nothing about their undefeated girls basketball team.  This qualifies the Methacton girls for the Rodney Dangerfield (We get no respect!) Award.  Undefeated, and yet maybe overlooked.  (Record credit: Philadelphia Inquirer)
2/22/08, Methacton: 28-0, ranked No. 4 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer. Downingtown East: 26-1, ranked No. 3.  They play tonight's 7 o'clock final at Villanova's Pavilion in a rematch of last year's second-round district playoff, which Downingtown East won by a 39-32 score.  (Credit: Philadelphia Inquirer)

2/25/08, The District 1 final was postponed from Friday night due to the weather, creating a Class AAAA final doubleheader Sunday afternoon. In the first game, the Methacton girls team saw its undefeated mark fall, as well, losing to top-seeded Downingtown East, 41-39.   (Tom Kerrane,  Norristown Times Herald).

2/3/08, Norristown boys defeated CB West 63-38 which wrapped up a 24-0 regular season.  They  are the second team in District One Class AAAA in the last three years to have a 24-0 regular season. Plymouth Whitemarsh had also done it two years ago.  Norristown, meanwhile, figures to be the district's No. 2 or No. 3 seed behind Chester, which played a tougher schedule despite having one loss, but still should be No. 1. Pennsbury, which also has one defeat, should also be in the mix for the No. 2 seed.  (Credit: The Intelligencer, Dom Cosentino)  Pahoops nominates Norristown as the Rodney Dangerfield (We get no respect!) of District One basketball, undefeated but ranked third.
2/22/08,
Norristown (28-0) and Chester meet tonight, the top-ranked Chester team has won six consecutive district championships and, yes, the Clippers are ranked sixth nationally by USA Today. But Norristown, ranked No. 4 in Southeastern Pennsylvania by The Inquirer, is being compared to the 1990 Eagles squad that went 27-2 and won the District 1 title.  (Credit: Philadelphia Inquirer)

2/25/08,  For the seventh straight year, the Clippers cut down the nets Sunday, handing Norristown its first loss of the season in the district final, 61-47, at the Pavilion at Villanova University.  The next part of the journey, the state tournament, will open for Norristown at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Council Rock North, when the Eagles will take on the fourth-place team from the Philadelphia Public League. That opponent will be determined today when Roxborough plays Bartram.  (Tom Kerrane,  Norristown Times Herald).

2/5/08, Woodland Hills scored 17 of the final 21 points to notch a 66-53 non-section girls' basketball win at Class AAAA No. 2 Norwin last night. Norwin was trying to become the only WPIAL school, boys or girls, to finish the regular season undefeated.  The Knights played without its starting point guard Nicky Costabile (knee injury).  Norwin  finished 23-1.  It was the last game of the regular season.
