Remembering which basketball events were being covered by the Williamsport Sun Gazette in the 1990's

January 10, 1990. National Girl's Scoring Record.  6'5 Lisa Leslie (Morningside, CA) scored 101 points in the first half to establish  the national record.  The halftime score was 102-24 and the losers South Torrence only had four players on the floor due to players fouling out.  South Torrence Coach  Gil Ramirez took his team off the floor and refused to play the second half.  He said, "Our girls have feeling too." Lisa Leslie said, "We weren't trying to run up the score."  Hmmmm!

February 1, 1990. Girl's scores: Hughesville 44 Lock Haven 34; Sugar Valley 50 South Williamsport 36; and sophomore Jolene Rogers hit 20 of 23 foul shots to propel Bishop Neumann to a 40-37 win over  Loyalsock.

February 2, 1990. The Hughesville girls defeated Montgomery 63-53 behind a career high 32 by Jill Barto.  Kass Paternostro added 17.

February 14, 1990. The Williamsport Sun Gazette featured an article on Dina White, the 5'9 point guard for the Williamsport H. S. girls.  The article mentions her sister Natalie who scored 545 points from 1982 to 1985 at Williamsport and her brother Peter who holds the school's career assist record with 553.

February 17, 1990. Junior Randy Glunk became the fourth Loyalsock player to score over 1,000 points by scoring 27 in as his team lost to South Williamsport 55-50.  Joey Wood had 22 for the winners.
Muncy registered their 22nd win with a 52-51 win over Southern Columbia fueled by the offensive put-back by Jason Scott with three seconds left.  Scott had a game high 21 along with 13 rebounds.

February 14, 1990. The Montoursville Warriors of Coach Harry Binger defeated the Lock Haven Bobcats 66-52 behind Geoff Edsell's 21 points.

February 19, 1990. The Lycoming College girls team featured "the Three Musketeers"-seniors Kristen Friel (Archbishop Carroll), Jill Rice (Tyrone), and Lonna Zook (Hollidaysburg).  They are now members of the Middle Atlantic Conference Northwest Section championship team., Lycoming College.

March 1, 1990.
The Hughesville High girls had only won 23 games over three previous years, but they won 24 of 25 for dream season this year to claim their first West Branch Conference championship.  Jill Barto led all Lycoming County female scorers with a 20.8 scoring average.  Other seniors on the team were Dolly Gardner, Missy Charles, Michelle Pearson, Katie Sherwood, and Kass Paternostro.

March 3, 1990. Loyola Marymont established an NCAA record victory when they defeated Michigan 149-115.  This was an NCAA tournament game!  Michigan was ranked #13, and these were the most points ever scored in an NCAA Tournament Game.  The win put L-M in the coveted Sweet Sixteen. 

March 9, 1990. The Williamsport Millionaire girls win the PIAA District 4, Class AAAA championship with a 59-48 victory over defending champion Shikellamy.  Dina White had 16 for the winners.  The Williamsport boys won their 10th straight District 4, Class AAAA championship with a 74-52 win over Shikellamy.  Jason Bullock had a game high 20 points.
The John H. Bower Sunday School Basketball League was finishing up with playoffs in three of the league's five age divisions.  All games were played in Bardo Gymnasium on the campus of the Pennsylvania College of Technology.

March 21, 1990.  Randy Glunk (Loyalsock) was chosen as the "Player of the Year" by the West Branch Conference.  The 6'3 junior averaged 23.1 points per game for the season. The 1990 All-Star Team included Nate Carpenter (Jersey Shore), Brent Young (Jersey Shore), Mark Mussina (Montoursville), Joey Wood (South Williamsport), T. J. Coffer (Loyalsock).  The second team: Brian Eastlake (South Williamsport), Lou Brungard (Bald Eagle Nittany), Geoff Edsell (Montoursville), Bud Yost (Lock Haven), Dave Pentz (Renovo-Bucktail).
The Loyalsock boys advanced in the PIAA Class A playoffs with a 71-59 win over Muncy.  Sophmore T. J. Coffey led the winners with 19.

March 24, 1990.  Loyalsock beat Elk Lake 53-49 to advance to the PIAA Class A Eastern Regional Final vs Shamokin Lourdes.  Mark Czap had a team high 7 assists for Coach Ron Insinger's winning Lancers.

March 28, 1990.  Loyalsock lost 68-54 in the Eastern Regional PIAA Class A Final to Shamokin Lourdes in the Shikellamy High gym. The "Sock" finished their season at 24-8.

Feb 5, 1991.  The combination of Kathy Reid, Jolene Rogers and Aimie Steinbacher led Bishop Neumann to a 65-42 win over Hughesville.  With the win Neumann improved to 14-4 and 5-0 in the second half.
Bald Eagle Nittany avenged an earlier loss to Jersey Shore by defeating the Bulldogs 41-33.  Shannon Bowers (13), Jennifer  Hendrix (9), and Chris Hill (9) led the winning Panthers.

Feb 10, 1991.  The Montgomery Red Raiders cited "balance, defense, and attitude as the keys" for their 19-1 start for the season.  Paula Ulrich led the team with 16.7 ppg.  The Lady Raiders of Coach Craig Weaver have held six of their opponents to less than 25 points.

Feb 19, 1991.  Coach Pete White's Williamsport Millionaires used their pressing defense to extend their record to 20-2 with an impressive 73-60 win over Coach Pat Gahr's Clearfield Bisons who came in at 18-1.  Geoff Clyke, Grady Walker, and Jason Bullock each had 18 for the winners.  Chris Moore (20) and Josh Kroell (18) led Clearfield.
South Williamsport, Bishop Neumann, and Montour stand tied for the lead in the girl's West Branch Conference second half race.  A coaches dream: Amy Engler of South Williamsport drew three charging  fouls in the win over Neumann.

Feb 25, 1991.  The Third Annual Montoursville Seventh Grade Classic gets underway at the McCall Middle School.

March 1, 1995.  Phil Hickey hit for 32 to power Wellsboro to a 63-50 victory over Towanda in the District 4, Class AA Semi-final.
