Northwest dedicated their gym to their coach, Ed Gayeski.  The coach and the Northwest "Rangers" responded with a 57-40 Susquehanna Valley Conference win over Shamokin.

Ken Illgen (17) and Gary Swank (14) led Southern Columbia to a 48-44 win over Milton.

St. Columbia's Steve Simmons, Jeff Mayfield, and Tom Austin combined for 41 points as the 7th/8th grade team outscored the Bloomsburg Area YMCA team 50-37. 
J. R. Sperry led the Y with seven.

John Shrom and Rick Wehr each scored 18 points as Elby's clinched a tie for first place in the Bloomsburg YMCA Men's Basketball League with an 88-62 win over KVS.

Tim Wilson had 15 points in the Southern Columbia 7th/8th Grade team win over Bloomsburg.

The Third Annual Christian Basketball Tournament opened with these teams: Bloomsburg Christian School, Heritage Academy, Berwick Community Christian School, Canaan Christian School, Meadow View Christian Academy, Elysburg Faith Tabernacle School, Williamsburg Christian School, Northumberland Christian School, and Pleasant Christian Academy.  The tourney was sponsored by the Susquehanna Valley Christian Athletic League.

Coach Mike Scala called it "one of our greatest combacks" as Berwick defeated Danville 46-41.  Berwick Junior guard Don Scatena came off the bench to lead all scorers with 16

West Snyder eliminated the Bloomsburg Panthers from further District 4 Class A competition 69-66. Greg Pealer had 11 points to lead Bloomsburg.  Karl Aikey led the winners with 18.

Karl Bucher (17) and Art Franklin (16) led Bloomsburg past Millville 62-42 in a District Four playoff game.  Chris Kile led Millville with 11.

Nancy Andy scored 20 for the Bloomsburg girls in their 66-63 overtime loss to Mansfield in the District Four, Class A Championship Game.

Dave Dent scored 23 as Berwick defeated Mt. Carmel 49-45 to win the District 4 Class AA title.  Coach Mike Scala called it a "total team effort"

Central Columbia hands Danville it's first Boy's Keystone League  loss 70-51.  Brian DeWitt with 29 and Terry Stitler had 17 to pace the Jays.

Larry Schnerr scored his only goal with 15 seconds left to help Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech register a 38-36 win over Pius X of Roseto and break the Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech losing streak at 20 games. Dave Luthi led the Rams with 14 points.

The unbeaten Southern Columbia girls recorded a 39-38 win over Bloomsburg.   Bloomsburg coach Tony Giovino called it, "the most exciting basketball game ever played in this league." Lisa Essig and Nan Martin led the winners while Karen Wordrop and Kathy Staib led the losers.

Millville trimmed Columbia-Montour VoTech 57-19. Robin Lutsey, Julie Vandenberg, and Charlotte Pollino combined for 38 points for the winners.

2/5/83 Sonia Perz scored 27 points as Benton, the Columbia County League first half champion defeated Central Columbia 78-26.  Perz set a school record earlier in the week by scoring 43 points.

Scott Kriebel from Benton was named "Press-Enterprise Athlete of the Week" -the 6'4 senior scored 29 in the win over rival Millville.

 The '76ers won the Bloomsburg Area YMCA Elementary Basketball League with a 10-0 record.  Team members included: Lewis Hendricks, Brian Clapp, Eric Prosseda, Chuck Chamberlain, Erie Wagner, Eric Growney, Eric Berg.  Lewis Hendricks was the coach.

Northwest defeats Karns City 58-38 for the  PIAA State Class A boys championship.

Eric Campbell scored 12 to lead Russell's-Powles Mobil to a 30-24 win over Kline Logging in the Bloomsburg YMCA Coed League First round Playoffs.

Shenandoah Valley eliminated the Benton girls from the PIAA playoffs 56-54.

Berwick Hospital defeated Bloomsburg Hospital 57-51 "in a spirited game that raised $255.00 for the auxiliaries of the hospitals.   The teams were supported by Auxiliary Cheerleaders!

Northwest defeats Cornell 48-38 for their second straight  PIAA State Class A boys championship at Hersheypark Arena.  Northwest ended the season 33-1 and 66-1 over the past two seasons.

The Benton girls win their fourth straight District Four Championship defeating Galeton 65-34.  The defensive efforts of Wendy Kriebel and Charlotte Hubler shut down highly touted Galeton forward Maureen Singer who came into the game with 1,469 career points.

The Bloomsburg Christian girl's basketball team finished second in the Caanan Christian Tournament.  Tricia Domenico and Sharon Harding led the scoring in the opening win over Baptist High School of Clark Summit.
The Bloomsburg Christian boy's team finished third in the Caanan Christian Tournament and Mike Weyhe was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Julie Wolfe scored 10 to lead Berwick to a 55-20 win over the VoTech.  Berwick also won the J.V. game 12-10 as Christine Powlus had 8 for the winners.

Deb Payne and Melanie  Naugle led the way as Central Columbia defeated Millville 43-20.

Berwick Sophomore Steve Tanribilir scored 10 points and gathered in 18 rebounds for Berwick, but they lost to Milton 70-62.

Press-Enterprise National News Flash:
"Pistol Pete" Maravich, the ex-NBA and collegiate star dies of a heart attack at age 40 playing a half-court pick up basketball game at First Church of the Nazarene in Pasadena, California.  Maravich was originally from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.
The Southern Columbia boys had four players in double figures in their win over Sullivan County 81-56.  Bryan Delsite had 16, Lewis Weikel had 15, Tom Sharrow had 13, and Jeff Michaels had 12 for the winners.

The Southern Columbia girls made it a sweep for the school.  They edged Bloomsburg 52-51 in overtime.  A pair of Meggan Fedder free throws with twenty five seconds to go the the overtime proved to be the difference.

Despite the 28 points by Heather McAfee, Bloomsburg Christian lost to Canaan Christian 44-53.

Central Columbia defeated Lewisburg 50-43 behind 26 Eric Wagner points.  Columbia coach Tony Da Re said, "We handled the ball well tonight."

"The Deadlines," the Bloomsburg Press Enterprise's basketball team will open it's season against the WBRE-TV "Peacocks."  Jumping center for the "Deadlines" will be 6'8" Bob McCullough from the Advertising Department, while Dan Gallagher, at 6'8" a reporter will jump center for the "Peacocks."  The game will be played at Nelson Field House on the Bloomsburg University campus.

Benton used the box and one defense to perfection to knock off Montgomery 43-37.  The win gave the Benton Tigers the Columbia County title and a berth in the state playoffs.  Sophomore Sue smith drew the defensive assignment of shutting down Amanda Eddinger of Montgomery and held her scoreless  in the first half!  Montgomery had beaten the Tigers 37-26 the previous week.

Southern Columbia used a tremendous rebounding advantage to sink rival Central Columbia 55-42.  Amy Kremser had 29 rebounds and Megan Fedder pulled in 23 rebounds.
Bloomsburg Christian led by Thad Hoffman (18 points) downed Norry Christian 47-39 and improved to  9-0 in the ACAA.

Millville eliminated Southern Columbia 52-42 at Diehl School despite the fact that two of their leading players, Amy Kremser and Megan Fedder fouled out.  Southern ended their season with a 15-8 record, while Millville moves on with a 13-9 record.
