Malvern Prep, led by head coach Jim Rullo, take a 15-2 overall record heading into there clash with the host Archbishop Carroll Patriots.  The Friars started the season 3-0 but did not pick up a signature win until they defeated Bartram on December 12th in the West Chester Scholastic Play-by-Platy Classic.  The Friars have one of the best junior tandems in the area in Dequan Walker and Lamon Church.  Walker, a 6’3 guard is averaging 15 points per game is a is a high flying leaper that energizes his teammates and the crowd with his acrobatic dunks.  Church, who scored a team high 24 points in that Bartram win, also averages 15 points per game and laos leads the club in rebounds and blocked shots.  The rest of the starting line-up consists of junior forward Mike Dougherty, junior center Tracy Peal, and senor captain Ryan Creighton who runs the point guard position for the Friars offense.

Head coach Chris McNesby had to figure out a way to replace Maalik Wayns who is now playing for Jay Wright at Villanova and graduated Roman as one of the finest basketball talents the Philadelphia Catholic League has ever seen.  Leading the Cahillites scoring attack this season has been senior Rakeem Brookins.  The 5’11 guard is averaging 20 points, four assists, and three rebounds per game.  Brookins is one of the quickest players in the city while handling the ball and will be continuing his basketball career at Tulane University next fall.  The second leading for Roman Catholic is senior Kevin Regan.  The 6’3 guard/forward is a terrific shooter who can burn defenses if doubling or trapping Brookins.  Finally, Roman’s front court is anchored by senior Anthony Mayo.  The 6’8 senior is a load underneath the basket and his defensive abilities is what carries the Cahillites team.  Mayo leads the team in rebounds and blocked shots and forces the offense to keep the ball away from the paint.  Mayo will head north to play for former Villanova assistant Pat Chambers at Boston University next year.

The Indians, led by head coach Vince Rogers, are limping into the event with a respectable 7-4 overall record.  Susquehanna Township participates in the Mid Penn – Keystone Conference, have been hurt by the injury bug for the past week.  The Indians, best player, Tajh Turner, a 5’11 speedster, missed the highly anticipated match-up against Bayard Rustin last week in the Harrisburg Villa Classic due to a sprained finger.  His status is still up in the air for this big non conference game against Shipley.  The Indians are searching for a spark before the home stretch of league games at the end of the month.  Susquehanna Township traveled east last month against North Catholic and came up just short on December 30th.  If coach Roger and his staff leave Widener with a victory over the Gators it should help restore the confidence on the team.

Head coach Frank Sciolla has led the Pennsbury Falcons to a 9-4 overall record heading into the weekend despite not having a regular taller than 6’1 out on the floor.  With Pennsbury’s all-time leading scorer Dalton Pepper now playing at West Virginia, the Falcons rely mostly on the senior leadership of point guard Jesse Krasna.  The 5’11 senior is a four-year starter and is a floor general for the coaching staff.  Another left over from last year’s 23-6 team is fellow senior Dante Devine.  The 6’0 guard brings a football mentality onto the court and is considered one of the toughest players on the team.

The Life Center Warriors are led by one of the most exciting players in the country, senior guard Dion Waiters.  The 6’4 sharp shooter is headed to Syracuse University next fall.  After an injury riddled 2008-09, Waiters is averaging 20 points, seven assists, and five rebounds per game.  Head coach Wilson Arroyo brings a 10-2 record into the event, the only losses coming against Our Savior (NY) and St. Patrick’s (NJ), the number one team in the country.  Coach Arroyo also depends on seniors Chris Thompson and Stojan Gjuroski to on the offensive side of the ball when the defense collapses on Waiters.  Life Center has impressive victories this season over Westtown Friends as well as Friends’ Central in December.

The Bartram Braves, under the direction of James Brown, have become one of the most exciting teams to watch in the Philadelphia area.  Senior guard Tyrone Garland has been a big part of that excitement.  The 6’1 senior, headed to Virginia Tech, is averaging close to 30 points per game after leading the city in scoring a year ago.  The Braves have an 8-4 record heading into the event but two of those setbacks were last minute decisions to Malvern Prep and Archbishop Carroll.  The most notable victory for coach Brown and his staff occurred in late December when the Braves knocked off Chester in the Jameer/Pete Nelson Classic at Widener.  A second option on offense for Bartram is point guard Quasim Jones.  Jones gets lost in the shuffle playing in the same backcourt as Garland but the 6’0 senior averages 15 points per game is a solid defender.

The Lions, led by head coach Kevin Givens, are the defending Friends’ League Champions.  This season ANC has impressive victories over Archbishop Carroll, in the West Chester Scholastic Play-by-Play Classic, and Germantown Academy.  The Lions are led by two of the best underclassmen in the Southeastern Pennsylvania.  Sophomore sensations Savon Lloyd-Goodman is the leading scorer for ANC averaging over 20 points per game.  He received the most valuable player award for his performance in both the West Chester Scholastic Classic as well as the Pete/Jameer Nelson Classic.  Junior forward Rakeem Christmas is the other underclassmen receiving interest from many Division I schools.  The 6’9 big man, who transferred from North Catholic a year ago is the premier shot blocker in the area and is a force under the basket.  The only senior on the active roster for ANC is shooting guard Warren Gillis.  The 6’2 captain is the vocal leader out on the court for coach Givens and is a deadly three point shooter.

The Carroll Patriots, led by Paul Romanczuk, are the defending PIAA Class AAA State Champions and are poised to add a Philadelphia Catholic League Title to its already filled trophy case.  Archbishop Carroll’s offense runs through standouts DJ Irving and Juan’ya Green.  Irving, a senior point guard will play his collegiate ball at Boston University.  He is averaging 14 points, four assists, three rebounds, and three steals per game.  He is most dangerous in the open court and can blow past any defender on his way to the basket.  Green, a junior shooting guard, is receiving many Division I offers.  The 6’3 marksman is averaging close to 15 points per game to go along with four assists, and two steal a contest.  The third starter averaging in double figures for the Patriots is senior Ben Mingledough.  The 6’4 forward brings energy out on the floor and is averaging 12 points and six rebounds per game.

Head coach Tony Chapman and his staff led the Firebirds to an 18-12 record and a third place finish in the District I Class AA playoffs a year ago.  Despite a brutal early season schedule, which included a heart breaking loss to Penn Wood, Holy Ghost Prep has established themselves as the premier team in the Bicentennial Independence Division.  The big presence in the middle for the the Firebirds comes from senior Nate Lorence.  The 6’6 center is averaging a double-double for the season and causes havoc on both ends of the floor underneath the rim.  Rounding out the frontcourt for Holy Ghost Prep are seniors Owen Kirby (6’4) and Duffy Barrett (6’3).  Both players bring experience and leadership on the court and are both quality outside shooters if given room from any defense.

Coming off last seasons disappointing 8-14 record, coach Andre Brown has his team already over the 10 win mark for the 2009-2010 campaign.  Leading the way for the Gators offensively is junior Ky Howard.  The junior combo guard is the leader out on the court for Shipley and the coaches depend on his leadership to push his teammates when needed.  Fellow junior John Carney is the leading rebounder and shot blocker for the Gators.  The 6’7 forward usually is in charge of defending the oppositions top big man and handles himself nicely, especially on defense.  A win over Susquehanna Township would certainly give the Gators momentum leading up to postseason and a possible championship.

The Aces, led by head coach Gregg Downer are the defending Central League Champions and are looking for that spark to propel them to back-to-back league titles.  That one spark right now is coming from senior Alon Seltzer.  The 6’4 guard sufferd a leg injury in the Aces league opener at Upper Darby in early December and missed a month of action.  Lower Merion welcomed him back with open arms two weeks ago when the Aces trounced previously unbeaten Penncrest by 22 points.  While Seltzer had to watch from the bench, fellow senior Oliver Cohen led the the Aces offensive attack.  The left hander is averaging 15 points per game to lead the team and is a very intelligent player.  The top rebounder and shot blocker on the Aces roster is senior Aaron Staley.  The 6’5 big man, who just started playing basketball three years ago brings a lot of energy to the court and scored a team high 17 points in the big win over Penncrest that put the Aces atop the Central League standings.

Head coach Jim Fenerty returned only two of his top eight players from last years team that finished 24-6 and claimed a Inter-Ac League Championship.  However, those two returning players are Division I standouts, seniors Cameron Ayers and Austin Curry.  Ayers the Patriots leading scorer and rebounder will play his college ball at Bucknell.  Curry is still not decided but has drawn interest from several Ivy League programs.  Coach Fenerty, in his 21st year at GA with over 450 career wins, rounds out his starting lineup with three players who never played a varsity game heading into this year.  Junior guard Jim Hammer, junior forward Beau Jones, and senior forward Jake Beil have played solid in there first season of varsity action.  This match-up against Friends’ Central will certainly judge how far GA has come since the start of the season.

Boys and Girls, coached by Ruth Lovelace, have established themselves as one of the top high school basketball programs in New York.  The Kangaroos are led by junior Michael Taylor.  Taylor, a shooting guard will be primarily matched up against Bartram’s Tyrone Garland.  This game will feature one of the best pure shooters from New York versus one of the best pure shooters in Philadelphia.  Whichever team holds the other in check should come out on top in this exciting match-up involving storied high school programs.

The Panthers, coached by former Temple star Mark Karcher, bring a 14-6 overall record into the event.  Saint Frances, located in Baltimore, are led by junior RJ Williams.  The 5’9, 160 pound guard leads the offense for the Panthers and is also a shut down defender.  This will be quite a chess match between Williams and Penn Wood’s Tyree Johnson.  Senior captains Wayne Sparrow and Dante Holmes lead a front court attack that likes to move without the basketball and roll towards the basket when Williams gives them the opportunity to put the ball in the hoop.  The two senior leaders will give the Patriots formidable front court some problems, especially if they can get them in foul trouble.

The Colonials, coached by Jim Donofrio are currently ranked as the #2 team in Southeast Pennsylvania.  Plymouth Whitemarsh has the top forward/center combo in the state with junior forward Jaylen Bond and senior center CJ Aiken.  Bond, at 6’7, is one of the most exciting and high flying players anybody will see this season.  He is averaging 15 points per game to go along with eight boards, and two blocks a contest.  He is receiving countless Division I offers but still has yet to decide on where he would like to play in college.  Aiken, a 6’10 big man is headed to City Line Avenue to play for Phil Martelli at St. Joseph’s next fall.  Aiken leads PW in points, rebounds, and blocked shots.  In December Aiken won the his teams MVP award in the Pete/Jameer Nelson Classic with two dominating performances against Chester and Academy of New Church, both Plymouth Whitemasrh victories.  Coach Donofrio also depends highly on senior guard Whis Grant.  Grant at 6’0 is probably the most underrated player in the area.  He runs the PW offense to perfection and is a lights out defender.

Penn Wood is the defending PIAA Class AAAA State Champions and is looking to make another run at states starting with this huge out of conference game against St. Frances.  The Patriots have not lost a game played in the state of Pennsylvania.  The Patriots behind the play of senior guard Will Brown (13 points) and newcomer Darion Barnes (12 points), Penn Wood handled Academy New Church on December 28 at Widener in the Pete/Jameer Nelson Classic.  The Patriots never broke a sweat with a surprisingly easy win over archrival Chester on January 10, a game played at St. Joseph’s.  Head coach Clyde Jones still depends a lot on senior point guard Tyree Johnson, the reigning Delaware County Times Player of the Year.  Junior Aaron Brown is also a key contributor for the Patriots, averaging close to a double-double for the season. And is drawing a lot of attention from Division I programs.  Finally, the big man in the middle for the Patriots is 6’9 power forward Shawn Oakman.  The senior still has not decided whether he will play football (defensive end) or basketball next fall.

Satellite Academy, out of the Bronx, is coming off a dramatic, buzzer beating win over Frankford in the Atlantic Christian Scholastic Classic on January 9.  Head coach Darryl Jones has his team with an overall record of 11-1 heading into the week.  When Satellite needs a scoring option they kook no further than to guard Jevaune Dawson.  Dawson is as solid as anybody from behind the three point arc and will make a defense pay if given room to shoot the basketball.  This will be an interesting match-up against Westtown.  Satellite has the speed and quickness while Westtown has the size and strength.  However, if Dawson can consistently drain three pont baskets it will be certainly beneficial for Satellite Academy and their offensive attack.

Head coach Seth Berger, a University of Pennsylvania graduate has played solid basketball since an early season loss to Life Center Academy o December 12 at West Chester University.  The Moose returned all five starters from a year ago when Westtown finished second to Friends’ Central in the regular season standings.  Sophomore center Daniel Ochefu was a first team All-League performer a year ago and continues to blossom into one of the top young centers in the Philadelphia area.  Coach Berger also depends on seniors Matt Lee and Doc Walker to provide the offensive punch for the Moose.  Lee is the top three point shooter for Westtown while Walker, at 6’7 is the best dribble drive offensive player out on the court for the Moose.  Walker scored a team high 14 points and was names team MVP in the December West Chester Scholastic Classic.

Head coach Andre Noble led the Panthers to a 33-1 record a season ago that included the PIAA Class AA State Championship.  Coach Noble and his staff are loaded with talent once again most notably, junior Eric Copes, a George Washington signee.  The 6’8 center still has another year left of high school basketball and wants to lead his team to back-to-back state titles.  He is one of seven Division I prospects on the Panthers roster.  Joining Copes in the scoring column for Imhotep is fellow junior Ameen Tanklsey, a transfer from Prep Charter.  The 6’5 shooting guard is one of the top underclassmen in the Public League and can create his own shot.
